Ecological Literacy
» The concept of Ecological Literacy extends beyond the discipline of environmental education. It aims "toward a deeper transformation of the substance, process and scope of education at all levels" (David W Orr). It is an education for sustainable living, teaching the basic principles of ecology while emphasizing a profound respect for living nature. Ecological Literacy strives "to open young minds to the forgotten connection between people, places and nature" (Orr), through an experiential, participatory, and multidisciplinary approach.
» An education for sustainable living introduces students to the web of life, the cycles of nature and the flow of energy, which encourages observation of the world in terms of relationships, connectedness and context. It is rooted in place-based education, highlighting the immense value of the immediate social and natural environment. This type of education mimics the structure of ecosystems by building networks of relationships which give stability and resiliency to social systems (like natural systems) in the midst of continual change.
» By learning to live in harmony with nature instead of attempting to dominate it, we are able to mimic nature’s patterns of organization. These are the very patterns that have created and sustained all life. They include: networks, diversity, cycles, flows, development, and dynamic balance. Ultimately, the ecological problems we face today are problems of values. This education addresses this issue and strives to change the way humans interpret and interact with nature.
» *Many of these ideas draw upon concepts presented in Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World
